The women would sometimes dye their eyebrows black with berry juice and reddened their cheeks using a plant called ‘Ruam’. Irish missionary monks were also known to paint or dye their eyelids black.

Preserving Food & Herbs

Roundhouses were ideal places for drying herbs and preserving food. Herbs were used in flavouring food and medicines. Meat and fish were hung up in the roof of the house where it would preserve and gain flavour amongst the warmth and smoke. Herbs and grain were ground using a quern or grind stone. Querns were made from 2 components, a small stone, held in the hand, and a large stone, where food was placed ready for being ground.

The Celts bathed frequently and even used soap, which they introduced to the Romans. It is not know whether or not the Celts did invent soap, but they used it to wash their hands in the morning and during bathing. After bathing they would comb oil and scented herbs into their hair.

Dyer of Fabrics or Herbal Healer ?
|

The Celts wove textiles, although weaving is basic technology by today’s standards, it was advanced for the time.
The Celts were fond of bright colours and would have used brightly coloured dyes that were available at the time made from berries, seaweed and plants. The process would first have involved using a mordant, which would help the dye adhere and change the end colouring. These would have been stale urine and metals such as copper. Dyeing was strictly a woman’s craft as it was seen to be unlucky to dye in the presence of a man. He was seen to curse the cloth so that it dyed unevenly. There were also rules about which days of the month or week were okay for dyeing. Dyers had a reputation for being herbal healers, since many dyes were used in folk medicine.
