Club Nile, the only visage... Posted at 09:00 EST
...of ancient Egypt on our island, was demolished last week to make room for condos. At one time the building was a Baptist Church. In the 1980’s it was sold and transformed into a nightclub called Quo Vadis. Yes, the original theme was Roman with fountains and statues. In the late 90’s it was sold once again and this time took on an ancient Egyptian theme. The old church bell tower was encased in signage with hieroglyphics and large images of the crocodile-headed god Sobek. The stained glass windows were replaced with images of various goddesses and gods. It was interesting looking to say the least.

I had never gone into the club after its Egyptian transformation. The crowd was young and well; I was too old to be going to foam parties. LOL Last week on my way home from work I passed the old building and it was gone. A broken image of Sobek could be seen amongst the rubble.

And so the only piece of ancient Egypt in our community is gone.
Burger-bits Posted at 00:30 EST
When my wife came home from work today I was firing up the grill to make dinner. She asked what we were having and I said, “burgers.” She began to laugh and asked, “Guess what we had for lunch?”

“Burgers?” I guess.

She laughed and said, “No, burger-bits.”

Now I know you are all wondering what burger-bits are, right? Perhaps some of you have experienced these disgusting little tidbits? Well, for those of you who are interested I will explain.

My wife is a second grade teacher in a rather poor school district. It seems that to save money they sometimes prepare lunches for the kids & faculty from leftovers. On Tuesday the lunch was hamburgers, so on Wednesday they chopped up the leftovers, breaded and fried them to make burger-bits. Needless to say the kids hated them.

I don’t know why I posted this story. At first I thought it was funny, but really it is kind of sad. Someone needs to fire the cook!

And I thought the lunches we received back in the day were bad!
I recently returned... Posted at 00:00 EST
...to AncientWorlds after several months of floating around the web. When I logged on a couple of weeks ago I felt kind of uneasy because I had taken on a couple of responsibilities which neglected to follow through with them. My track record for dependability in online communities hasn’t been all that good since the days of AS. I didn’t have to worry however because I was immediately greeted by Lotus, one of the Egyptian Scribes, and I suddenly felt as though I was never gone.

I can remember reading the article in Archaeology Magazine about AS several years ago. The description was an online community where “History comes to life.” I joined that very night and discovered that the motto was true. There was a uniqueness to that community and I have to say that AncientWorlds has done an excellent job in picking up where the old site left off. This community is made up of some of the friendliest, accomplished and hard working people I have ever met on the web. The broad range of activities from debate and games to writing and education is outstanding. The different cities and unique member homepages are unsurpassed by any site I have belonged to or visited. This truly is an outstanding community.

So now...what is my point? I guess I just wanted to say that although my level of participation may wax and wane this community will always have a special place in my heart. I am glad to be back once again.
