DAILY LIVE IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Daily Life
The people of Ancient Egypt treasured family life. Their children
meant everything to them and were considered a blessing. In the
lower classes the mother raised the children. In wealthy and royal
homes slaves assisted in the care taking of the children.
An Egyptian wife and mother was highly respected in society. A
woman's main role was "mistress of the home". Unlike many ancient
cultures, she was equal to men in numerous ways. She had legal
rights, participated in business ventures, owned land, and
represented herself in the courts
Many recreational activities of the Ancient Egyptians were painted
on their tomb walls.
All Egyptians enjoyed singing and making music. They would chant
when working in the fields, or worshipping in temples. They also
sang in times of funerals, when tending sheep, and at banquets.
Banquet songs reminded everyone of how good life was. Some of
their musical instruments were flutes, pipes, rattles, cymbals, and
drums.

Some of their favorite pastimes were fishing, river boat outings,
swimming and hunting crocodiles and/or hippopotamus along the
Nile River.
Also, the upper class loved to give lavish parties where music, food,
and drink were in abundance. Festivals usually were holidays to
honor the gods.
Food
The fertile Nile River Valley and warm climate were ideal conditions
for farming. Barley and emmer, a type of grain, were the main
food crops. These grains were used to make over seventeen types
of beer and fifty kinds of bread which was their main diet. Some of
the other vegetables and fruits grown were peas, garlic, beans,
lettuce, cucumbers, leeks, figs, dates, and grapes.
Food was cooked in clay pots which were also used as containers for
grains, water, wine, beer, flour, and oil. They also enjoyed
desserts like pastries and cakes. Dates and fruit juices were used
to sweeten them.
Animal, fish, and fowl were hunted. Pharaohs and noblemen used
hunting as recreation. Peasants depended on fish to add variety in
their diet.
Many homes had a kitchen area with wood or charcoal fires for
cooking. If slaves were owned, they would prepare and serve the
meals
