"Amen is at peace": This is the birth name given to four of the great pharaohs of Dynasty Eighteen and born proudly by many nobles and citizens. This name has a Theban ring to it. There, in the village of workmen who make the pharaohs' resplendent tombs in the Valley of the Kings, a cult has grown up around the deified Amenhotep I. A (non-royal) notable, one Amenhotep son of Hapu, was an important official under Amenhotep III and was also deified posthumously for his renown as a wise and powerful man.
Amenhotep I was the son of Pharaoh Ahmose I, and the second ruler of the 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom. Among his achievements was to lead an expedition of war to Kush. Apparently, he also attacked Libya. He began the construction of the Temple of Karnak. He reigned 25 years.
Four rulers reigned in between Amenhotep I and II. Shortly upon
succeeding to the throne, he was called upon to put down revolts in tributary Asiatic cities, at which he met with much success.
Afterwards, he concentrated on Nubia, completing temples at Aswan and Amada. He returned to the Asiatic direction in Year 9 of his rule, subduing people in the Palestine area. He reigned for 34 years, and the rest of his rule appears to have been peaceful.
Amenhotep III had a long rule of nearly 40 years. His was a reign
marked by little warfare, other than small actions in Nubia. He was the son of Thutmose IV, and he had a large collection of wives. The Chief Wife, Tiy, was a non-noble woman he'd taken as wife prior to his ascension to the throne. His was a time of the flowering of the arts.
His own son, Amenhotep IV, eventually took the name Atenakten.
The name means "Amon is Pleased".
