The Egyptian Family
Osorkon
Four kings bore this name in the Twenty-Second Dynasty.

Son of Sheshonq I, Osorkon I's reign (c. 924-889 BCE) was peaceable and lengthy. It was marked by considerable political manoeuvering around the office of High Priest of Amun, a process which was to have lasting repercussions on the stability of his reign. He endowed temples, building extensively.

Grandson of Osorkon I, Osorkon II (c. 874-850 BCE)endured considerable problems with the Theban pontificate which he attempted to resolve by appointing a son to the office, a usual practice. Osorkon II was an energetic ruler, ruthless in suppressing aspirants to the Theban High Priesthood. He built widely and was responsible for many works of high quality. In the political arena, he was active in seeking alliances to counter the rising power of Assyria.

Osorkon III (c. 777-749 BCE) was the great-grandson of Osorkon II. Though High Priest of Amun, he also led Egypt's armies, becoming King at Leontopolis at the death of Sheshonq IV. At a time of extreme insecurity in Egypt, he managed to contain the influence of his rivals in the south by skilful manipulation of ecclesiastical appointments which was one of the marks of the time.

Osorkon IV (c. 730-715 BCE) came to the throne at an extremely low point in the Egyptian monarchy's fortunes. His power was limited to the region containing Tanis and Bubastis. He was the final king of the dynasty.
