Isocrates (436 - 338 B.C.) was born into the wealthy family of a flute manufacturer, and was given the best eduction available. Unfortunately he was forced to earn a living when his family lost their money in the Peloponnesian War. He became a speach writer for the courts for about ten years, then denied ever doing it.

His wealth and fame came after becoming a teacher of rhetoric, and many of his students went on to be important leaders. Only the rich tended to be able to afford Isocrates' school, of course this was done with the idea that the "elite" should be prepared to lead society. Believing that it would unify society, he promoted panhellenism, and did so through the education process at his school.
