From around 600 BC until the coming of the Romans in 52 BC, various Celtic tribes ruled the land that was called Gaul. Major hillforts, or oppida, were located at Alesia, Bibracte, Entremont, Gergovia, Lugdunum and Lutetia. These were thriving centers of agriculture and commerce, both before and after the Roman conquest.
