One of the fundamental tenets of Classical Feng Shui is to build your house with your back to a mountain. If your home is backed by something solid and firm, you are assured support all your life. There should also be open space at the front of the house so your view of the horizon isn't hampered. To have a view of water, auspicious energy will be brought into your home. The best is a slow moving river that meanders (i.e. is not straight). This will allow the chi energy time to accumulate before entering your home.

In lyrical Chinese terms, the mountain is the Black Turtle and the river the Red Phoenix. An even better site for a home is one that will have a shorter range of mountains on the left (the Green Dragon hills) and gently undulating hills on the right (the White Tiger hills). These four celestial animals are used to describe the classic feng shui landscape. Nestled comfortably between them, you will be supported by the black turtle, made prosperous by the green dragon, protected by the white tiger, and have wonderful opportunities brought to you by the red phoenix..
