In a Celtic context, the Faeries developed between Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages as the aloof, debilitated race of gods and goddesses - the Tuatha De Danann. These Fair Folk became the Sidhe, sometimes-benevolent spirits of the hills. Their stories, that developed as pseudo-history of Ireland's Ossianic Cycle, were full of wonder and enchantment.
