Old Norse is the ancestor of modern Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Icelandic. This is the language of the Eddas and Sagas and, through the journeys of the Vikings, it was heard from Russia to North America. It also had a profound effect on the development of English and is one of the most important of the old Germanic tongues.
