On the Friday before the Sunday before Lughnasadh, thousands of pilgrims climb a hill known as St. Patrick's Mound. But there is a pre-Christian tradition behind this. The Dindsenchas tell of the legend of Mag Slecht. On the Plain of Genuflection in County Cavan, Ireland, there was a golden statue of the old god Crom Dubh and eleven other stone figures around it. People went there and prayed to Crom Dubh for a good harvest of corn, milk, and protection from harm.
