From roughly 1600 until 1850, the political "Edo period" in what is now modern Tokyo saw a series of peaceful autocratic shoguns rule, bringing with it a period of stability that was not seriously compromised until Commodore Perry's mini-invasion of Edo in the 1850's. During this period of peace, the arts flourished in Edo and a particular school of Japanese woodblock printing led to the development of exquisite artists, whose prints have been world famous ever since.

A series of printmakers, many attached as craftsmen in some way to the Shogun's court, took the simple monocolor woodblock printing of an earlier age into exquisitely textured views of people and places that, to this day, provide a window into a largely feudal Japan.

Please explore the galleries of these artists; further Edo-period artists will be added over time.
