The Aegean Sea is filled with islands and they have played an important role in the history of Greece from the Minoans down to the present day. The Greek islands are divided into a number of groups, several of which are represented here.
The Islands neighborhood is one of the most active in Hellas. It is filled with role-playing groups and many other things. From the main ‘hood page, you can view the webring and learn a little more about a few of the people who have built residences here. You can also take a tour of the islands or perhaps catch up on your island trivia. It’s no wonder that the Greek Islands were named a Special Place in 2007. The islands are divided into four areas: the Dodecanese Islands, Crete, Cyprus, and the Cyclades.
The Dodecanese Islands
The Dodecanese group is located in the southeastern Aegean off the coast of southwestern Anatolia. The name means Twelve Islands, referring to the twelve large islands of the 163 which make up the group. The islands were originally uner the control of the Minoans, then the Akhaians, and the Dorians. After the Persian Wars, the islands belonged to the Delian League. They did their best to stay neutral during the Peloponnesian Wars, which allowed them to maintain their prosperity. Currently, the only island to be developed is Rhodes.
Rhodes
Rhodes was probably originally settled by Carians from Asia Minor. They were followed by Minoans, Akhaians, Phoenicians, and Dorians. Shifting allegiances constantly (though not always voluntarily) during the fifth century BC, the island prospered but was in frequent conflict with Mausolus of Caria and his successors. The island supported Alexander. After a failed attempt at conquest by Demetrios Poliorketes, they sold his seige engines and built the famous bronze Colossos, one of the seven wonders of the world. From here you can view some 360° panoramas of Old Town Rhodes. Iolanthe Glaucon has built a Colossal Hut. Drop by and leave a message. Rhodes is further divided into three cities: Ialysos, Kamiros, and Lindos.
Ialysos
The city of Ialysos is named for the like-named grandson of Helios. It was located on the northwestern coast of the island, around the hill known today as Philerimos. It was one of the three Dorian poleis of Rhodes and a co-founder of the the city of Rhodos. As yet, no one has built here.
Kamiros
Kamiros is located on the western side of the island. It was the smallest of the three cities that founded Rhodos. As yet, no one has built here.
Lindos
Located on the eastern side of the island, Lindos was the most important of the cities which founded Rhodos. It was always a major trading and religious center, with temples to Athena Lindia and Herakles. In the sixth century BC, Linods was ruled by Kleoboulos, one of the Seven Sages of Greece. Lindos was also home to Khares, the sculptor who built the Colossos of Rhodes. Scribus Emeritus Damon Harmodios has an oikidion here.
Crete
Crete is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean and lies southeast of the Greek mainland. During the Bronze Age, it was the home of the Minoan civilization and is the scene of many myths, from Io and the bull to Daedalus and Icarus to Theseus and the Minotaur. Our digital Crete is divided into four districts: the East District, the Knossos or North District, the Phaistos or South District, and the West District. And if you have ever been to the real Crete, drop by and share your experiences.
The East District
The East district of Crete was a flourishing part of the Minoan civilization. Here are the important Bronze Age cities of Gournia and Palaikastro, the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros, the Dictaean cave (which Cretans claimed was the birthplace of Zeus), and much more. From here, you can also go to the role playing group Exotikos, which has much to do with the island of Crete. Rhadamantys Glaucon has built the Little Town House of Gournia here. Cyprus
Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean, has been inhabited since the mid-Neolithic era. It has given its name to copper, which was found there in abundance, and to the cypress tree. According to myth, it was the birthplace of Aphrodite, home to Teucer the half-brother of Ajax, and the place where Pygmalion carved his famous statue. Currently, Cyprus has only one polis: Paphos.

The sacred island of Delos is the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Rich gifts flowed to the island from all over the ancient world. After the Persians were driven out of Greece, the allies met at Delos and formed the Delian League, which became the heart of Athenian power and the source of the wealth that built the golden age of Athens. Thera
Thera was the site of a major urban center and port in the Minoan era, known to us today as Akrotiri. It is also known as the Pompeii of the Aegean, because in the 17th century BC the volcano which formed the isalnd suffered a catastrophic eruption, burying what remained of the island in ash and pumic, preserving the site in excellent condition.
