10 Things to Say When You're in China

In this article, we'll continue with the lessons of my last article, 10 Things to Say When You're in Japan, but this time we're exploring Chinese phrases. There are many reasons to give your attention to these regional phrases, not the least of which is that it lends so much to your academic credentials *w* -- it's also a hoot! So, on that note, here are 10 Things to Say When You are in China:

These greeting are based on the more formal use of the language. These would be appropriate when greeting someone of great respect or authority, like a senator, religious leader, or the head of a household.

  • Dsao Shang hao
    This means: Good Morning
  • Wan shang hao
    This means: Good Evening
  • Wan an
    This means: Good Night

The formal greetings are safe for nearly all occasions, but your close friends may feel you are being a bit of a snob. Here are some more relaxed greetings to use while hangin' in the hoods: *g*

  • Hai Peng you
    This means: Hey, friend!
  • Ni zhen hao
    This means: You are very kind!
  • Mei wen ti
    This means: No problem!

And here are a few phrases that will have you departing the Orient with class and charm:

  • Dài huì ér jiàn
    This means: See you later!
  • Wo gai zou le
    This means: I have to go!
  • Wan an
    This means: So long!
  • Zài jiàn
    This means: Good bye!

This last phrase, as I stated in the Japan article, is not to be underestimated. The Chinese drink as much tea as the Japanese, so one must always be prepared. The last phrase you need to know while hood-hopping in China is:

  • Xi shou jian zai na li?
    This means: Where is the toilet? *g*

So, there you are! 10 Things to Say When You Are in China (well, actually, 11 *w*) that will impress your friends and neighbors -- and just might educate them as well. So, go forth and use your newly learned phrases unabashedly. You'll feel like a regular Orient-o-phile, and your neighbors will think you're really cool! Good luck and happy visiting!
