The Bulgars
A people, most likely of central Asian origin whose language was Turkic, which began moving into the area between the Caspian and Black seas sometime in the second Century AD. As of the 530's AD, the Bulgars were raiding into the Balkan provinces.
Always moving further south, the Bulgars even reached as far as Greece, by the 580's AD.
The Bulgars eventually merged with Slavs who lived in these areas and created the first independant Slavic state recognized by the Byzantine empire near the end of the 7th century AD. Nearly 200 years later, they converted to Christianity and eventually were defeated by the Byzantine Emperor Basil II in the late 10th Century.
