Welcome to the Land of the Brigantes Confederacy!
These lands are now officially under control of the mighty Brigantes Confederacy! Long believed to be the most numerous and powerful of the northern tribes, the Brigantes were also the last to truly fall to Roman imperialism. Their main stronghold was at Ebraic, also called Eboracom, which is now the modern city of York. The Brigantes stretched from Western Gaul all the way to Eastern Ireland, and got their name from their patron goddess, Brighit (pronounced Breet). Indeed, the very name "Brigantes" translates roughly to "People of Brighit". Primarily a pastoral people, they could be roused to near-legendary fighting fury when the need arose. They were mortal enemies of the Catuvellauni, and their nemeses were the Iceni. Constant squabbling over lands and commodities served to fuel the enmity between the Brigantes and their neighbors, but due to their sheer numbers and resources, the Brigantes usually got the better of their rivals. Like all Celtic peoples, the Brigantes were unfamiliar with sexism - they had female rulers (most notably Cartimandua), female priestesses, and female craftspeople. They were ruled by a person called Brehyrion (a unisex title), who had a team of advisors, most probably druids of both genders. By the second century CE, the Brigantes were a dying breed, with splinter groups spread throught Northern England, the Lowlands of Scotland, and Ulster in Ireland. |
