Looking Forward, Looking Back

Julilla Sempronius, AncientWorlds

Editorial

I remember the day as if it were yesterday. On the 10th of January, 2002, I received a short note from Jot, intimating that he'd spent the final months of 2001 cobbling code together for AncientWorlds, "taking the best of what was learned over the past five years and leaving behind what wasn't working."

It is two years now since that brief note electrified me and my sister-goddesses, Cornellia and Heraklia, and, as the word spread, more and more familiar faces appeared, and plunged in to fan the flickering flame to life.

Today, we've grown from a handful to nearly 11,755 citizens, many of whom have made the community what it is today. The many ideas and dreams have germinated into fruitful soil indeed. We've even been lucky enough to persuade Bryce Yupanqui to double our team of programmers (it's been Jot, solo programming for the past two years).

We've been incredibly fortunate to have been rewarded with the dedication of many volunteers, chief amongst them our wonderful city scribes. I'd like to take another opportunity to recognise the following scribae emeriti, many of whom have served in the trenches from those early days two years ago:

Carrying the flame into this year, let us not forget our continuing and new scribae:

So what can we expect in 2004? Jot has locked himself into his temple on Olympus, working through the bug reports that have been submitted via Bryce's excellent bug tracker. Before we locked him in, Chat rooms were implemented at patron's homes, all cities and groups.

Neighbourhoods will start to appear, perhaps as early as Spring. And, of course, the big news, a new AW city, The Orient, will be founded. Be sure to read more about the progress of this new city in this edition.

Last, I find myself at the helm of the Acta, looking forward to keeping up with Hap Nebet and Vort Aedui, who really do all the work, and back to the days long, long ago, when I cobbled together the AncientSites newsletter all by my lonesome.

We've made tremendous progress over the years, and it's gratifying to see the talents of our citizens displayed in this month's edition. Read on!
