Deadly Nightshade

Would you believe the plant known as Deadly Nightshade is in the same family as the friendly tomato and huckleberry? This has long been known as an ingredient for "witches' brew". The dark purple flowers look so enticing and the shiny black berries could be good enough to eat - but don't you dare!

Nightshade, also known as Belladonna, is a true friend of Samhain, with a dark history and frightening effects. Small rodents especially love to eat the berries. If you know of a spot where there always seem to be dead mice or moles lying about, you'll probably find a nightshade bush nearby. Let that be a warning.

The berries guard against the evil eye. A necklace of nightshade berries was found in King Tut's tomb! Nightshade is an ingredient of witch's Flying Ointment.
