Acorns - Macha's Harvest
Associated to Place: articles -- by * Moss Dubhdara Niall (64 Articles), Social Article
The ancient Celts had a rather grisly name for acorns. Macha was a war-goddess and her harvest was the severed heads of warriors who died in battle! But there's a more pleasant side to acorn lore, since they're also considered to be gifts from the faeries. There's an old saying - "The faery folks are in the oaks!"

Acorns are the seeds of the Oak, each one carrying within it the pattern for a great tree. Oaks are considered sacred in almost every culture, especially among the Celts and the Norse, because of the tree's strength and longevity. Naturally the acorns became fertility charms (fertility of the mind and spirit as well as the body), also symbols of long life, even immortality. They are charms against lightning (since the oak tree is a favorite target for strikes) and just about every "evil" from storms to bad vibes.

An acorn on a necklace, touching your heart, will protect against deception and illness. Acorns should be gathered in the daylight, oak leaves and wood at night, always during the waning moon.
