Apples - Tokens of the Otherworld
A lot of Samhain or Halloween games involve apples. Bobbing for apples is probably the first one that comes to mind. Also, peeling an apple or twisting off the stem to find out the initial of your future mate. If you look beneath the surface of these fun customs, you'll see that the apple is thought to be something like a token to the Otherworld and grants a glimpse beyond the mists that surround our mundane lives.
The holy place known as Avalon in Arthurian myth is also called Insula Pomorum or "the Isle of Apples". To the Irish, it was a magical island called Emain Ablach. Celtic lore is full of tales about magical apples. In Echtrae Conli (Connla's Adventure), the hero is fed an apple by a faery lover and needs no food or drink for a month afterwards. The catch? It also makes him pine away for his lover. Bury an apple at midnight on Samhain to feed those waiting rebirth. Eat a large apple on Samhain for good luck in the new year. If you cut an apple crosswise, the pattern of seeds forms a star. No wonder it is thought to be a magical fruit! |
