Armorican Megaliths- Dolmens
This dolmen consists of three chambers. It had originally been covered by a mound, however a sketch made by the 18th Marquis of Robien, a Breton noble from the 1700's shows the dolmen as being much the same as it is today. There are many stories about fairies having built this huge dolmen and that one can see them moving through the passage into their underworld. ![]() The Rock of Fairies is 65ft (20m)long and 13ft(4m)wide. The rocks that make up the dolmen together weigh some 40 tons and are made of purple shale dating from the Cambrian period. This is one of the largest and most important dolmens in France. This dolmen is believed to have been built by the Celtic tribes living in Brittany although this dolmen may also predate the Celts. The builders of this dolmen had the organization and technical skills that for their time were most amazing! |
