Magic show at Chitzen Itza
One event in March is the magic show at the Kulkulkan pyramid (also know as El Castillo) where on the 21rst or sometimes on the 22 of March there is a snake-shaped shadow coming up (or was it down this time of year, I'm not sure, I'll have to look it up for you) the pyramid....and so marking the Spring equinox

Ballgame - rough idea
Since on the 21 of March we're going to Chitzen Itza anyway, I though it would be a nice idea to try out a virtual ballgame in the ballcourt that is very close to the Kulkulkan pyramid.
The idea is as follows:

The ballgame will be played with a leather ball, the rules of the game have to be partially invented or adjusted. ideas/suggestions??

I'm thinking of making teams of two people so we can play "leagues" of people in more or less the same timezone...

For the finals we will have to think of a central time or have three winners for different timezones...

What a neat idea, Chan!!!
Er . . . can you explain just a bit more, O MP Scribes, what is involved in this? Does one have to be coordinated? Does one have to be bright? Is this an Incan Harry Potter Quidditch thing?

I'd love to play, but it might be safer to cheerlead from the sidelines! Advice?

Rules and explanation of the ballgame

TWINS
In the sacred Maya book the Popol Vuh, there's a story of two brothers, Xbalanqué and Hunahpu who were so good at the ballgame that they were invited by the Lord of the Underworld to play there. The Lord of the Underworld wanted to trick the boys, but the boys were too clever and defeated the Lord of Xibalba.
WINNERS or LOSERS
In most texts about the ballgame it is said that the losers were being sacrificed to the Gods, but as I learned in Mexico itself, it is much more likely that it was the captain of the victorious team that was sacrificed, since this ritual was seen as an enormous honour and it guaranteed the "victim" a place in one of the heavens... it is said that this is the reason why the Mexican football team never wins a match... *S
THE COURT
The ballcourts that can be found in Mexico differ greatly in size, especially the one in Monte Alban, which is so tiny that it's likely that the game was played here with only two players and it may have looked like a game of squash, since there were no scoring rings, only sloped walls on either side. The general opinion is that on larger courts, the game was played with 4, 6 or 8 players and one referee.
YOKE
In many books I've found that the players were wearing a stone hip-belt (yoke), but after having seen one or two of these belts, I cannot imagine that they were actually used during the games .... they were huuuugeeeeee and must way about 30 kilograms... if not more, so Dinn and I have come to the conclusion that it is more likely that they were worn by the victorious captain, on his way to the sacrificeblock

The virtual ballgame of MP

Explanation of the game:

The game looks a little bit complicated, but it takes a lot of explaining to make it an interesting virtual event, so please read and if there's things that are unclear, please report this prior to the 21rst of March.

The referee will start the game by introducing the ball on one of the short sides of the field

Only the teamcaptains start off in a position where they can hit the ball. The captain who posts before the other captain, has a hit (Wait on decision of the referee!)

The captain who has been classed to have hit the ball, describes the hit (scoring is not possible from this point, because the angle is simply impossible) and tells us to which player he/she has send the ball to. If he/she fails to post within two minutes, this means that there was no hit and the captain of the opposing team has the chance to hit the ball within the next two minutes. In case both captains fail, the game ends inmediately with as result: a zero- zero score.

In the meantime:
All the other players have to write within 2 minutes, where they are standing or have moved to: if there's no position mentioned, this means that this player in question is either sleeping, focusing on someone in the audience, has fainted or is too drunk to or drugged pay attention ... and will be seen as a "still" player
If the ball is played to a "still" player, he/she won't be able to hit it, so the ball will hit the ground: free hit for the opposite team.
If members of the opposite team are not posting their position and or actions it means that they have not moved from their previous position. They won't be able to reach the ball. So unless the ball hits the ground, this means a free hit for the team that is in possession of the ball.

After two minutes the referee will state the name of the player who has ballcontact and all the players will have the next two minutes to describe their actions. The player who has had ballcontact describes his/her hit and in which direction he/she has played the ball. And the other players will state their movements.

 Rules

Posting
Each player is allowed only one post every two minutes (more posts means: disqualification)

Play time
Each game lasts for 2x 20 minutes with a break of 15 minute

Official
Each game has one independent/objective referee who has the final word

Players
Both sexes of the human race are allowed in one team (sorry Heraklia, no llama's allowed in this game*s*)
Those who are gifted with supernatural powers to control either the ball or other peoples minds or with the power to take out a person's heart without some kind of weapon are not allowed to play

Weapons
There are no weapons allowed, neither objects that can be classed as such. This also goes for the public!

Protective accessories and waist-belts may be used if there are not sticking out more than 3 centimetres from the bodypart to which they are attached
Good protection of the weaker parts is strongly advised!

 Teams
Depending on the amount of players we will decide how many players there are in one team.

Postition in the field
Each player will be getting a startposition. This will be assigned to him/her when the schedules are made.

 Scoring
When the ball goes through one of the ballrings that are placed on top of the sloped walls on either side of the ballcourt one scores a point

Allowed bodyparts to hit the ball with
The ball may be played with all bodyparts, except for hands, feet or head.

The ball may not hit the floor
In case it does hit the floor, this means a free hit for the opposing team

 Free hit
The referee will introduce the ball into the game again, by throwing it to one of the players of the team who urned this free hit

 Hands, Feet and Head
In case these bodyparts are used (accidently or not) it means a free hit for the opposing team. In case of a shot that hits unallowed bodyparts of one of the members of the opposing team, this is seen as foul play: The shooter gets a yellow feather. (see feather penalty's). If the ball hits someone on the head, this means that this player suffers from a slight dizziness and he/she will automatically be classed as a "still" player for two minutes.

* this number is subject to change, depending on the amount of players
In case of system failures, the referee will decide wether more time is granted or if the worst comes to the worst wether the game should be played over.

This ball game sounds like a hoot. Been reading and rereading the rules. Technically speaking, I am a dog, which means I could have ended up on the festival dinner platter, and I don't count as one of the mascots. So, should I just cheer on the sidelines? I know about the equinox at the castillo. It would be fun to see the magical display among friends.

From the very top of Kukulcan Pyramid
Here I stand, perched and waiting, at the very top of the Pyramid of Kukulcan in Chichen Itza. Here I live, and here I shall remain for eons to come. For I am the Chac Mool.

Today we celebrate a festival of ages. On this day and no other, a great spectacle of the Gods shall awe the eyes of man. In homage to the wonder that is about to unfold, I raise my cuauhxicalli vessel to the gathering crowd below. This sacrificial cup has held the beating hearts of many a warrior.

Alas, I look to the east. The sun shall soon rise, bringing with it the awesome vision.

This Pyramid, Kukulcan, was constructed with one step for every day of the calandar year, and today, the equinox of Spring, those who gather below me shall behold one of its many mysteries. So here at the top of the Pyramid of Kukulcan, in Chichen Itza, I am pleased by the gathering of celebrators, as they await the Sun-marvel that shall soon appear before them.

    ~ Chaac Tupac
Even more about the Kukulcan Pyramid
What amazing timing! Thank you, Chaac :)

~bows to Chac Mool~

Well, today is the day. I am the first to arrive to see the yearly vision. Sitting cross-legged on the ground, front and center, I gaze up at the incredible structure. At the very top, there is a shrine or temple of some sort. And I wonder what the amazing vision will be? Will someone or something come out of that doorway? Or will someone or something climb all of those steps?

As I await more spectators, I imagine the view from the top of Kukulcan. If I tried to climb the steps now, would I be arrested?

I look both ways.

But as the sun begins to rise, I put that thought out of my mind and prepare myself for what is to come.
    ~ MartianMuse MorningStar
Taking my place, at the base of Kukulcan
Jungle flame I have visited the sacred Cenote and made appropriate offerings. In anticipation of this twice-yearly marvel, I now join those who have gathered at the base of Kukulcan.

This is the Vernal Equinox; the first day of Spring. We have come together of one mind and with one wish... To see the mystery of this temple, and the intricacies of its design, in action. We wish to know the Gods that dwelleth here. Words can not express the anticipation I feel as I sit beside the others and wait.

Before long, I can feel it... that familiar warmth on my back, kissing my sun-bronzed skin, marking the dawn of a new day in Chichen Itza. Soon... yes soon, a miracle of light and faith will occur before our very eyes.

The really BIG Snake

Spring Equinox at Chichen Itza

At the Maya city of Chichen Itza, an astronomical phenomena occurs on the Spring Equinox involving the Kukulkan Pyramid, also known as El Castillo. The pyramid is designed and oriented to use the equinox sunlight to form the body of the snake god Kukulkan in the shape of 7 triangles that are approximately 37 yards long (a really BIG snake), by reflecting sunlight and shadows on the western side of the northern staircase. At the bottom of this staircase only (there are three others on the pyramid), rest carved stone heads of Kukulcan.

The page listed below explains how through observation of the position of sun throughout the year, the pyramid was designed and oriented by Maya astronomers to use sunlight to create different visual effects on specific days, such as the Equinoxes where the sun passing over the corners of each level of the pyramid forms Kukulkan's body using light and shadow.

http://www.isourcecom.com/maya/cities/chichenitza/shadowof.htm - Chichen Itza - the Shadow of the Equinox

The following images are linked in from the URL above. These show the orientation of the pyramid in relation to various solar days such as the Equinox and the Solstice. The second image reflects what occurs at the time of the Spring or Fall equinox.

The body of Kukulcan on the staircase

The following text is exerpted from the site listed above.

Each side of the pyramid has fifty two rectangular panels, equal to the number of years in the Mayan cycle (at the conclusion of which they typically constructed a newer structure over an older one)
The "square" that makes up the overall base of the structure is exactly 18 degrees from the vertical.
The Maya universe was comprised of 13 "compartments" in 7 levels with each compartment being ruled over by a different god. El Castillo reflects these beliefs as seen in the shadows it casts. 7 levels are shown in the 7 light triangles. 7 Triangles of light and 6 darker triangles give 13 triangles in all corresponding to the 13 overall levels of the underworld.
El Castillo was primarily built to represent Snake Mountain, the mystic place where creation first occurred in Mayan folklore. Snake mountain is a design practice adopted in Teotihuican as well as the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Though brought to its full artistic maturity in Chichén Itzá, the design is much older than any of these cities...Nowhere in the Mayan world is there a larger or more impressive representation of the Snake Mountain design than in El Castillo, nor one with as much functionality as is detailed below.
